TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC INSTITUTIONS
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify one authoritative philosophy of music institutions nor to define a universally ideal organization. Institutions differ in purpose, scale, history, resources, legal context, and relationship to their publics. A useful field of inquiry must remain responsive to these differences while retaining the capacity to judge consequences, expose contradictions, and distinguish plurality from the avoidance of responsibility.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions from which multiple philosophies of music institutions may emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. They may disagree about the meaning of excellence, the distribution of authority, the role of tradition, the demands of public value, or the proper relation between artistic autonomy and institutional accountability. Their value will not lie in convergence, but in their ability to clarify what is at stake and to connect claims with arrangements.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new institutional possibilities thinkable. It is also to become more accountable for the concepts already in use: to ask what they authorize, whom they address, what they conceal, and how they materialize in the lives of artists, workers, and publics. The residency begins from this task and invites participants to undertake it collectively.
